Director of Nursing

SUMMARY and PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Director of Nursing is accountable and responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the clinical operations of the surgery center. This individual ensures that patient needs are met in accordance with the instruction of a physician and the Center’s clinical policies and procedures. Coordinates activities routinely as appropriate, with the Administrator, the Medical Director, Charge Nurse(s) (if applicable), the Business Office and the Quality Committee(s). 

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Director of Nursing reports directly to the Administrator.  This is a working supervisor position.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Quality / Safety / Regulatory Compliance

  • Provides assistance with the development and implementation of policies and procedures pertaining to all clinical areas.
  • Ensures the delivery of effective and efficient management of the Center.
  • Serves as a member of the Patient Care Committee.
  • Interacts with the Administrator and staff to enhance communication and problem solving.
  • Accounts for all occurrence reports pertaining to all clinical areas and completes follow-up summaries to be reported to the Patient Care Committee.
  • Verifies that State and Federal Laws and requirements regarding all clinical areas are met and documentation is current.
  • Provides assistance to ensure the confidentiality, security and integrity of information in the Medical Record is maintained.
  • Leads and directs clinical staff for effective delivery of quality patient care.
  • Participates in the development of the quality improvement process.
  • Monitors and evaluates patient services by observing and guiding staff performance according to Center standards of care and practice, policies and procedures. 

Daily Operations

  • Ensures that pre-operative, operating room and post-operative patient care services are provided in accordance with written policies and procedures and in compliance with various regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Responsible for efficient and effective patient care and quality improvement in all peri-operative areas.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of all clinically related areas.
  • Provides assistance with determining pre-operative, operating room and post-op goals and effectively manages resources to achieve the goals.
  • Maintains a collegial relationship with physicians and Allied Health professionals to ensure quality patient care.
  • Works closely with the materials manager to maintain an adequate inventory of pre-operative, operating room and post-op equipment and supplies.
  • Responsible for clinical personnel management, which includes recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and retention of clinical employees.
  • Responsible for the daily supervision of all clinical employees and delegation of duties to ensure the efficient operation of all clinical areas (e.g., Pre-op/O.R./PACU/SPD), effective patient care and quality improvement.
  • Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Responsible for fostering an environment that promotes staff growth and development.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Surgery Center, local hospitals, and the community.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of new programs supportive of the Center’s strategic plan.
  • Assists the Administrator with the development of the Center’s annual budget from a clinical perspective and provides reports as directed and/or needed.
  • Promotes cost-effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste.
  • Develops work schedules, monitors daily staffing needs and assignments.
  • Ensures occurrence reports pertaining to the clinical areas are prepared as appropriate according to Center policy and investigates patient/employee/physician/visitor occurrences.
  • Will interview, select, orient, counsel, evaluate and follow appropriate Center disciplinary policies as it pertains to the clinical employees.
  • Maintains timely documentation and records of assigned staff to be used in performance appraisals.
  • Works closely with the Administrator and Business Office Manager for ensuring that scheduled cases are compliant with the Center’s Board of Managers approved procedure list.
  • Provides assistance with the ordering, receiving, and storage of supplies.
  • Responsible for supporting systems which facilitate the timely and accurate registration of patients to the facility, and which ensure efficient patient flow from the waiting area to the pre-operative area.
  • Assists with the management of medical records along with the proper storage, retrieval and release of medical records. Ensures that the center’s procedures regarding the management of the medical records are in compliance with accreditation guidelines, as well as State and Federal regulations. Conducts quarterly chart audits to ensure completeness of the medical records.   
  • Maintains security of the computer and medical software system and reinforces the same among all clinical staff.
  • Responsible for annual evaluations of all clinical employees.
  • Fosters an environment that promotes staff growth and development.
  • Maintains the ability to function as a back-up for all RN positions within the Center.
  • Responsible for other functions as assigned by the Administrator.
  • Ensures that Quality Improvement studies are developed according to state licensure laws, Medicare regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Participates in the Patient Care Committee meetings. 

Customer and Employee Satisfaction

  • Evaluates suggestions, grievances and processes pertaining to all clinical areas and identifies opportunities for improvement of performance and quality of patient services.
  • Responds to physician, employee, patient and visitor complaints.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled meetings of the peri-operative areas to allow staff the opportunity to exchange ideas and communicate needed information.
  • Promotes positive and effective working relationships among Center staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient, physician and staff satisfaction as it pertains to the clinical areas. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education, Credentials, Licensure: 

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • High School graduate or GED certificate recipient 

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio
  • Current BCLS and ACLS certification 

Specialized knowledge: 

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred. Proficient in the use of personal computers; ability to multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and situations and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.  

Knowledge of state-specific and federal healthcare regulations and standards as these pertain to the clinical areas within an Ambulatory Surgery Center. Familiar with achieving and maintaining facility licensure, certifications and accreditations of regulatory and accreditation organizations. 

Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must be detail oriented and organized. High integrity, including maintenance of confidential information. Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence and lead others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies. Ability to effectively present information to administrative leadership and medical committees as required. 

Type and Length of Experience: 

  • Demonstrated managerial competence and two (2) or more years of management experience in an ambulatory surgery center or an operating room in an acute care hospital.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance (e.g., working on a computer for prolonged periods of time).
